  • Australia: Brew Monkey
    About Brew-Monkey.com
Why is there a Brew-Monkey.com? Well, I got tired of searching all over the net to find the information I wanted on making beer. I wanted to know what was going on in the world of beer, have information on brewing and beer as well as be able to discuss these things with other like minded people. I had a few extra minutes (well, not really) and took it upon myself to create something of my own, something different. I figured I can do this and started researching and writing some of the articles that make up the content on Brew-Monkey.com. Planning for Brew-Monkey.com was started in August 2003 and it went live in October 2003. Brew-Monkey is meant to be a place to learn, share, and explore information about homebrewing as well as a place that supports the promotion of real beer.

Brew-Monkey.com is owned, designed, maintained, broken, fixed, etc. by Chris Love. Born on the East coast, growing up in the midwest and now residing on the West coast - I am a 30 something guy with interests varying from luthiery, brewing, music, writing, and computers to restoration therapy, and martial arts. By weekday I am a computer professional, by night I can be found practicing jujitsu, as I have done since 1994. By weekend, I work at a specialty food and beverage store - purveying beer, wine, and spirits to the masses, as well as educating the public about good beer. Occasionally, I put on beer classes to help further the knowledge and appreciation of good beer. I always get enjoyment out of someone coming back in the store and telling me that now they know specifically what they like in beer and can pick out something they enjoy and know why they enjoy it. I love teaching people about good beer, be it commercial or homebrewing. To teach is to learn and I never want to stop learning. I am also an award winning homebrewer as well as a BJCP judge - scoring in the Certified class on the exam on my first attempt. With a desire to have a brew pub of my own, I continue to brew as much as time and space allow.

The Canadian Amateur Brewers Association is a federally incorporated nonprofit organization, dedicated to the promotion of homebrewing and the education of home brewers through educational seminars, workshops and publications.

CABA was started in 1984 as a forum for homebrewers, both novice and experienced, to exchange ideas, skills and their love of homebrewing. Since then conferences, competitions, flavour perception and judge training seminars have become annual events.

CABA is an organization run by amateur home brewers, some of whom bring expertise from the brewing industry. CABA has members from across Canada as well as from various countries around the world. Elections are held in the fall of each year to choose a board of directors. All paid-up members are eligible for these positions.

  • New Zealand: Home Brewers
On my return to New Zealand many years ago, after living and home brewing in the US, I set out to get involved in home brewing in New Zealand. I found it extremely hard to get hold of any information about home brew clubs, or home brew competitions. Either there weren’t many home brewers in NZ or they were all hiding.

After a long (beyond the efforts of any ordinary human) search and visiting many local home brew shops I discovered there was a community of brewers out there but getting in touch and getting involved was difficult for the average home brewer.

Now we have created an area on line where everyone interested in home brewing in New Zealand can visit to find out where their local home brew shop, and club are. You can become a member of the online community to share knowledge and ask questions. Plus you can let other home brew friends that this resource is available online.

If you know of a homebrew club, home brew shop or some home brew resource whether it be online or in the real world, which we haven’t highlighted in this section please contact us (info@homebrewer.co.nz) and let us know. We are striving to make this an ever improving online resource for beginning and advanced home brewers.

    Cheers

  • Philipines: Homebrewers Association of the Philippines
The idea behind the Homebrewers Association of the Philippines is to meet other people in the Philippines who enjoy the craft of homebrewing beer, wine, mead, cider etc. To share ideas on homebrewing, equipment and techniques.

At present this is a virtual or web based association with a group on Yahoo. Members can ask questions and get advice from other members. Although the association is specific to the Philippines, Pinoy OFWs, etc. should feel free to join as well.

Hopefully we can exchange ideas and advice online and plan for a real meeting, tasting or brew day sometime this year. So far we have members from Luzon, Visayas and Mindinao, so we are geographically spread out. We are also mostly ex-pats, and I personally would like to see some Filipinos join in the fun. Maybe we can encourage our friends to join up too. It's free!

    Regards,

    Dan

  • South Africa: The Wort Hog Brewers
The Wort Hog Brewers (WHB) are a group of homebrewers based in South Africa who aim to promote beer brewing as a hobby and the responsible drinking of this magnificent beverage. The following points should provide you with enough information to understand the club and this website.

BACKGROUND ON THE CLUB & HOW TO GET INVOLVED

The WHB's club grew in the period post 1995 due to the energetic activities of a number of homebrewers in the Johannesburg & Pretoria region of South Africa. The WHB's hold meetings early in every second month of the year and have mostly met at venues in and around Pretoria. The club has grown however in such a way that a regular meeting in Johannesburg is now also possible. Furthermore, a small group of homebrewers in South Africa's 'Eastern Cape Province' have taken on the WHB name. In time we hope other groups in South Africa will work with us to establish other regional homebrewing clubs.

  • Sweden: The Swedish Homebrewers Association (SHBF)
The Swedish Home Brewers Association (SHBF) is a non-profit association of about 1000 members.

The purpose of SHBF is to spread information about small scale beer brewing, and especially brewing at home.

SHBF annually organises the open Swedish Championship in home brewing. 2006 was the eighteenth time that the championship was held. 2007 year's championship will be held the Stockholm. Nowadays there are more then 300 entries and the standard of the competing beers is very high. For example in 1997 the brew that took third place in the light lager category in our championships won the National Homebrew Contest in America (brewer Jesper Schmidt). Almost all brews are made by all-grain, but there are some competitors that uses extract based brews. For example in 1994 the Best In Show was an Imperial Stout made from malt extract.

  • UK: Craft Brewing Association
CBA was formed in 1995 when one homebrewer, James McCrorie, became frustrated that there was no organisation in the UK dedicated to brewing quality beers at home, despite the fact that homebrewing was a craft which had existed for centuries. He received sufficient support to form 'the craft brewers association'.

CBA is a non-commercial, volunteer, self-help group of homebrewers who wish to maintain the craft of brewing and improve their beers.

    WHAT IS A 'CRAFT BREWER'?

A craft brewer is a home brewer who practices the true craft of brewing to the best of his or her ability. most homebrewers start with beer kits but some move on to more skilful methods including liquor treatment, yeast propagation & full mashing. In short, we aim to brew the beers which professional brewers would like to brew, were they not constrained by accountants, marketing men and the need to maximise their profit.
